One of my responsibilities at National Geographic is to create simple, mobile-first graphics and maps for shorter stories distributed by Apple News, Google Amp, and other third party outlets. Many of these are created on demand in only a few hours, from the initial data acquisition to the final copy editing. Being able to make a simple graphic that can be read quickly on a small device is extremely important in the fast-paced setting of a newsroom. While default bar charts are often effective, sometimes creative graphic solutions are required to tell the story.
